Steven D. Wright
Originally a journalist, I started in TV on legendary show The Word (C4) and was an integral part of a team who went on to revolutionise - and eventually run the television industry...
I helped originate the format of The Sunday Show (BBC2) where I managed to land a huge exclusive - the first ever TV interview with Prince in over 20 years (whereupon Prince famously refused to speak one word on camera).
I was Series Producer of The Best of British (BBC1) celebrating British icons – and where my film on Barbara Windsor was a huge rating smash and acclaimed ‘as one of the best docs of the year’ by The Daily Telegraph.
I was Series Producer on Turned on Europe (MTV) - over 50 no-holds-barred short films set among young people in Europe. A genuine TV event, it raised questions in Parliament with its shocking footage of heroin addiction in Eastern Europe and predatory paedophiles in Prague, etc.
As Head of Factual Entertainment at Rapido, I made Around the World in 80 Raves (C4). A huge hit, it remains iconic and very influential with its stylised editing, look and killer soundtrack.
As C4's first ever Commissioning Editor for Factual Entertainment, I created an entire genre of programmes. One of the most notorious was Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster – which exposed the horror and madness of celebrity and earned me huge praise from C4 Controller, Tim Gardam, that I ‘had re-invented the grammar of documentary making’.
Other big critical hits included The Showbiz Set, Sex on TV, award-winning format Make My Day and Bernard’s Bombay Dreams where Bernard Manning flew to Mumbai to perform his racist gags to a bemused Indian audience.
Perhaps the most difficult commission was The Importance of Being Morrissey which generated both worldwide fan hysteria and lawsuits - and ended with a bitter Morrissey writing a song about me called “How Can Anyone Possibly Know I Feel?”.
In my five years as Creative Director of Shine I generated over £35m of programmes including the BAFTA nominated Story of Light Entertainment (BBC2), The 1970s: That Was The Decade That Was (C5) and Comedy Songs BBC4’s highest rated doc ever.
I did Julie Burchill’s first ever film Chavs (SKY1) which broke ratings records for the channel. As well as specialist factual drama-doc Life and Death in Ancient Rome (SKY), The Last Hunt (SKY) and Abi Titmuss: A Modern Day Morality Tale (C4) which explored tabloid fame and selling sex as a career path.
I created the long running Most Annoying series for BBC3 which satirised pop culture. Other youth-orientated shows include The Noughties: Was That It? (BBC3), How to Be Famous (E4), Musicool (C4), Je Suis Un Rock Star (C4), Love Bus (C5) and Gleeful: The Truth about Show Choirs (E4).
Remarkably, I'm still plugged into the youth market – recently creating Ex on the Beach (MTV) a reality format turned worldwide hit generating over 600 episodes, spin offs and numerous foreign versions (and which directly influenced the revamp of Love Island).
And I am also still creating new international formats – with Celebrity Call Centre (C4) which has been optioned by 13 countries so far and was recently re-made in the US, Portugal and Belgium…
